Support
Group for Individuals With Memory Loss & Their Caregivers
September 13-October 18, every Wednesday, 1-2:30 p.m. A program for individuals
who are memory impaired and their caregivers. Two groups meet simultaneously
- one for the persons with memory loss and one for the caregivers. Participants
must be aware of their diagnosis and be able to communicate their concerns.
Family caregivers must attend the caregiver group. Cosponsored by the
Alzheimer's Association and JABA.
FREE.

Free Prostate Screening
Saturday, September 23, 7:30-10:45 a.m. The American Cancer Society recommends
healthy men age 50 and over consider screening for prostate cancer every
two years. For African-American men or men with a family history of the
disease, screenings should be considered at age 45. This free screening
includes a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and a digital rectal
exam (DRE) by a Martha Jefferson Urologist.
FREE.
No appointments; screenings are on a first-arrival basis. Martha Jefferson

Osteoarthritis:
What's New
Thursday, September 28, 1-2:30 p.m. Various forms of arthritis affect
more than 55 percent of the elderly population. Join Vincent Giuliano,
M.D., a board-certified Rheumatologist, and Cindy Stabenow, an Occupational
Therapist from Martha Jefferson, for an in-depth discussion of arthritis.
Topics include diagnosis, prognosis, classification, and common treatments.
Joint protection and lifestyle modification techniques will be shared
with plenty of time for your questions. A representative from the Arthritis
Foundation will be present.

Is
It Depression?
Thursday, October 5, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Feeling sad for a few days can be normal;
but when sadness persists and is accompanied by other symptoms such as
changes in sleep and appetite, it could signal depression. About 1 in
5 adults will experience depression. There are effective treatments for
depression. Join us for a free informational event on depression. You
will have the opportunity to take a simple test to determine if you are
at risk. Referrals will be provided for those in need.

Fridays & Diabetes
Friday, October 6, 9-10:30 a.m. Diabetes is a serious disease that can
lead to blindness, heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, and amputations.
Many people have no symptoms - they discover they have diabetes when they
seek treatment for one of its complications. New guidelines recommend
everyone age 45 and older should consider being tested every three years.
Our Certified Diabetes Educator will join us this First Fridays to provide
information and free blood sugar screenings for diabetes.

Tuesday, October 24, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Join us for the 14th annual Health
Awareness Day, which includes nearly 20 health screenings for adults age
50 and over including: brest exams, colon cancer home screening kits,
prostate exams, skin cancer screenings, osteoporosis screenings, blood
sugar screenings, vision and glaucoma testing, and more. Fasting is not
required for the blood tests. Co-sponsored with the Senior Senter, Inc.
