About this newsletter
We want to keep you informed of progress on the Outpatient Care Center, so we have created this e-newsletter. Every couple of weeks or so we will send you the latest. If you have any questions or want more detailed information, please email us at info@mjh.org.

Construction:
The Outpatient Care Center is progressing on schedule for completion in August 2003, according to Ron Cottrell, VP in charge of the project. Structural steel is 99 percent complete, exterior framing is 55 percent complete and workers have started running the brick "skin" on one side of the building. All underground plumbing has been completed on the first floor, electrical and mechanical systems have been roughed-in on the second floor and the elevated concrete work has been completed on the second and third floors and the roof. According to Leonard Copeland, Project Superintendent for Bovis Lend Lease Inc., 275,000 cubic yards of dirt have been moved, which is the equivalent to 35,000 dump trucks full. Workers have poured 10,000 cubic yards of concrete, erected 296 tons of steel and placed 75,000 tons of bricks. The trim material consists of a type of decorative concrete known as ground-face masonry that resembles granite.

In addition to Bovis Lend Lease Inc. for construction management, Martha Jefferson's partners in the project are: FreemanWhite, architects, Charlotte, N.C.; Kahler Slater, interior designers, Milwaukee, Wis.; and Matthews Development Co. L.L.C., program manager, Charlottesville.

Interiors:
Color palettes have been selected, plans for the lighting are completed and the process for selection of the furniture is underway. Goals for the interior are to create a very inviting, comfortable, colorful design. Positive distractions will include natural slate walls and handcrafted leaf tiles, which have a theme that is unique for this project. To create an optimal healthcare experience, these positive distractions will continue in the most personal settings - exam, procedure and recovery areas. Barrel-vaulted ceilings and interior nature themes will connect to beautiful, long views as well as intimate gardens and a gathering terrace. Decorative painting and a graphic wall display will be designed around the theme of Martha Jefferson Hospital's history and will be completed in time for our Centennial celebration.

Operations:
Susan Cabell, VP, Administration/Human Resources, and Marijo Lecker, VP, Administration/Operations are heading up a committee of representatives from various departments to develop a staffing plan and a timetable for recruiting and training OCC employees. Customer service training will be an important component of staff development at the OCC, and a process is underway to select the most appropriate training model. Achieve Global is a contender, and the renowned Ritz Carlton customer service model will be reviewed. We expect to select a training model by the end of the year.

Services planned for the OCC are:
• Diagnostic Medical Imaging
• Outpatient Surgery Center (a joint venture with physicians)
• Urgent Care Center
• Women's Health Center

· Breast imaging

· Stereotactic biopsy

· Midlife services

· Prenatal Diagnosis Center

Other features of the OCC are:
• Leasable space for physician offices
• Education/meeting room
• Premium café service
